After 28 days on the campaign trail, Premier Doug Ford secures another majority, while opposition parties fail to gain traction.
Overview
- Premier Doug Ford won his third majority after calling a snap election’ on January 29, 2025.
- Premier Ford did not get the mandate that he set out for in the election and will gain only 1 seat in the legislature.
- The NDP will maintain status as the official Opposition.
- The election was 15 months earlier than the fixed date; June 4, 2026.
- Ford announced he needed a strong and clear mandate given the threat of incoming tariffs from the U.S.A.
- He is the first person to win three consecutive majorities in 66 years.
- While the Liberals won enough seats to earn official party status, Leader Bonnie Crombie lost her bid for a seat in Mississauga East- Cooksville.
- Crombie stated that she is planning to stay on as Liberal Leader despite the loss.
- The major change in the election is the Liberal Party of Ontario gaining official party status.
- The NDP are the only party in the election to lose seats in the election.
- Voter turnout was 44%

Ajax
- PC Patrice Barnes, Deputy Speaker, is set to lose her seat to Liberal Rob Cerjanec.
Durham
- Incumbent PC Todd McCarthy wins, Liberals in second place.
Hamilton Centre
- NDP Robin Lennox wins, Independent Incumbent Sara Jama comes in last place.
Hamilton Mountain
- PC gain from NDP with a win for Monica Ciriello
London Fanshawe
- Incumbent NDP Teresa Armstrong wins, PC Peter Vanderley in second place.
Mississauga East-Cooksville
- Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie loses to PC Silvia Gualtieri, who is mother-in-law of Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown.
- Gualtieri is also the sister of PC incumbent Rudy Cuzzetto, who won Mississauga-Lakeshore.
- This is the first brother-sister combination to serve together.
- Uncle-Nephew PC Ernie Hardeman and NDP John Vanthof have been reelected.
Toronto-St. Paul’s
- NDP incumbent Jill Andrews loses to Liberal Stephanie Smyth (Liberal).
Official Party Status
- The Liberal Party of Ontario has regained official party status after seven years, surpassing the 12-seat threshold set by the Ford Government in 2018.
Party Leader Statements
PC Leader Doug Ford said he will “fight tooth and nail against Donald Trump” after his PC majority win. “This election, we asked the people for a mandate. A strong mandate that outlives and outlasts the Trump administration. A mandate to do whatever it takes to protect Ontario. Well, friends, the people have spoken.” Doug Ford said in his victory speech.
Marit Stiles, leader of the Ontario NDP maintained official opposition saying, “Our job is to hold this government to account and that is the job we are going to do…and in the face of Trump we will stand together”
Liberal Leader, Bonnie Crombie noted the 30% increase in the Liberal vote and the return to party status while announcing she would stay on as leader. “I know tonight isn’t exactly the result we were looking for, but you should be very, very proud of what we did tonight. People counted us out. They said the Ontario Liberal Party was dead. Ha. Tonight, you proved them wrong.” Bonnie Crombie said in her statement.
Green Party of Ontario Leader, Mike Schreiner congratulated Doug Ford and said he and his party would do their job holding the government to account.
